Chamber opera Ghost Love is adapted from the sensational novella of the same name by Xu Xu, published in the 1930s. Set in old Shanghai, the story depicts a mysterious encounter between a man and a woman who calls herself Ghost. Recreated onto the opera stage by Hong Kong composer Chan Hing-yan and young playwright Yi Heng, the production is directed by the sought-after Japanese director Tomo Sugao who is currently residing in Berlin, and conducted by Lio Kuok-man, the first Chinese taking up the position of Assistant Conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Second Prize winner at Evgeny Svetlanov International Conducting Competition 2014 in France. It also features three outstanding Hong Kong vocalists starring as “Man”, “Ghost” and “Moonlight” and Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, ready to enthrall the audience.
“A remarkable work.”
──Sek Kei, Stand News
“The main strength of the work itself…is in creating atmosphere; this – surreal and oppressive – is what lingers after the curtain has come down.”
