Eminent Hong Kong choreographer Helen Lai revamps two music masterpieces in this double-bill production. Lai gives rendition to ten songs selected from Schubert’s 1827 song cycle Winterreise, merging music with dance that evokes the sense of solitude. With music by Stravinsky and choreography by Nijinsky, The Rite of Spring caused an uproar at its premiere. Lai’s choreography, showing the tussle of power among choreographer, performers and audiences, was premiered in Hong Kong in 1992, followed by its Taiwan premiere by the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre. The 2019 version specially features the participation of Taiwanese dance artist Chou Shu-yi, with live accompaniment by two pianists.
“Helen Lai is the only choreographer who works with the legend of the opening night, and then subverts the legend itself.”
